Fully custom made LED Dice PCB

What?

  • Selected a LED dice circuit schematic from online to create a physical model from

  • Composed mainly of a 555 timer, 4017 counter, resistors, and LEDs, all powered on 9V

How?

  • Designed the PCB traces in Fritzing

  • Printed the traces onto a copper board using special photocopier paper and acetone

  • Etched the design onto the copper board using a combination of chemicals

  • Drilled holes and soldered over 30 components to the exposed copper board

Results?

  • Reduced number of jumper wires by 33%

  • Built a functional portable LED dice with 0 errors in soldering or components

  • Learned a lot about the entire process of making a custom working PCB

  • Understood how to troubleshoot electronics using a schematic and multimeter
